Step 1 | Step 2 | Step 3 | Step 4 | Step 5 | Step 6 | thumbnails Figure 6. From behind, sort of the occipital view, we see the third ventricle in the midline, thalamus, and brain stem. Note the stria terminalis between the thalamus and caudate. This is a fiber tract connecting the amygdaloid nuclei, (in which emotional impact may be formulated), with the hypothalamus, (where the motor responses to emotions are integrated). The fuzzy material on the left stria terminalis is a remnant of choroid plexus. Pulvinar of thalamus (visual integration) is the huge nuclear eminence overshadowing the medial geniculate nucleus (auditory relay) and brachium of the superior colliculus (fiber tract for retinal input to superior colliculus). Each brachium of the inferior colliculus can be seen reaching forward to end in an ipsilateral medial geniculate nucleus. On the midbrain, the lateral prominent bulges are the cerebral peduncles. Casting a shadow on the floor of the fourth ventricle, the (efferent) superior cerebellar peduncles can be seen to form part of the roof of the ventricle. The inferior and middle cerebellar peduncles can also be seen where they have been cut short of their entry, (afferent), to cerebellum. |
