As discussed
in the lecture on Morphogenesis, the development of the central
nervous system is dependent upon the precise sequencing of inductive,
proliferative and maturational events. The initiation of each
sequential event is generally under genetic control. Yet,
environmental factors can a have significant influence on the progression
of these events. Thus, developmental abnormalities can have
both genetic and environmental causes.
Please
view each of the four cases on the following pages. Compare the
MRI images taken from the abnormal case to similar sections taken
from a normally developed brain. Try to identify the obvious differences.
